DC Comics did a lot of this sort of thing, didn't they?

My Greatest Adventure #47

“I was king of the sea beasts!” The comic has three stories of which the cover feature is the last. Nothing earthshaking story or art wise and the book was already in rough shape when I got it, but still worth one little green dollar at least.

The first story features intelligent animals plotting to conquer earth. Second is a semi-humorous ghost story/inheritance mystery. The third and final tale is the one from the cover. A fisherman finds a chest full of mystery potions and temporarily becomes Aquaman. Not exactly, but that sums it up well enough. The story seemed headed for and then slightly averted the inevitable “was it all a dream?” ending for which I was very grateful.

The anthology format of the stories was a mistake, I think. The cover story could have benefited from a longer, more in depth treatment, but anthologies were just how comics like these were done back in the day, a lingering component of the EC formula both Marvel and DC were desperate to recreate after letting comics code crush them as any sort of competition to the Big Two.

With a shade more violence and fanservice this kind of stuff might still sell.
